Shady Allie Hiatus

Hi folks, today is the day. I came home and turned on my pc, and it didn't. I unplugged the cables and was going to look inside the case (as I suspected my graphics card was failing) when i noticed my monitor didn't give me the warning about it being unplugged. Just black screen. I then smelled the crispy smoke of electronics burning.
I will be unable to play for a few months at best, until I can gather the extra funds to replace it. My vehicle needs brakes and a windshield first, which also must wait.
All I have is my laptop: granted it is powerfully fast, and up to multitasking at ease, but lacks the graphics chips to play. See you in a while...

Sorry to hear of the computer failure, Shady. We'll all be waiting for you to return.

Egads....burning electrical components is never a good sign. Very sorry to
hear about the failure, do you know if it is just the graphics card? I might
have an older spare laying around from when my server machine went down...
Probably not the greatest card, but certainly used it to play NWN in the past.

I work for a IT dept for my job so I have alot of 'stuff' hanging around

I have several PCI slot graphics cards
nvidia and ati - from 128mb to 512mb

i have a few PCI-E x 16 cards
nvidia only both 512MB

I also have a windows XP box - Hewllett Packard DC 8000 (look it up for stats) that is brand new and just collecting dust in my closet.

I also know the mailroom staff really well (I have fixed all their home PC/Networks at one time or another) so I am sure they would ship anything I ask 'by company' so wouldnt cost me anything.

so speak up! need or want anything? I really dont mind and would rather see any of these things go to someone like you then just sitting in my attic or closet.

I'm pretty sure it was my 19" crt monitor that died. The smell was comming out of the back of the vents of the monitor. Whenever i unplug the monitor from the graphics card, there usually is a color bar image that popped up on the screen indicating the monitor wasn't getting input from the system.
When I unhooked the blue cord from the pc to monitor, that didn't happen. just black like it wasnt on, but the green light on indicator was showing the monitor was plugged into the wall and getting juice.
The monitor does not work when plugged into my laptop. laptop "sees it" and i can try to set it up for display, but it remains black.

I cannot test my graphics card for failure, although i believe that is not the component that failed.
